Password Complexity Requirements

Mercer requires that your password must meet the following requirements:
  • Contain at least 10 characters
  • Include at least 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, 1 number, and 1 special character (e.g. $, &, @)
  • Must not contain 3 consecutive characters present in your name or ID (e.g. If your ID is smith_j, your password cannot contain 'smi' or 'mit')

Enroll in Password Self-Service

The first time you log into the password self-service website, you will be prompted to select answers to security questions. Once your answers have been saved, you will be able to reset your password by answering the questions.

  1. Visit https://pwhelp.mercer.edu and log in with the same username and password used to access your computer, email, or MyMercer.
  2. Click the Click Here button at the prompt to set up your account.
  3. Select and provide answers for the required security questions.
  4. Click Enroll.

Change Your Password

  1. Visit https://pwhelp.mercer.edu and log in with the same username and password used to access your computer, email, or MyMercer.
  2. Click the Change Password tab.
  3. Enter your current password in the Old Password field.
  4. Enter your new password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.
  5. Click OK. Once changed, the new password will become effective immediately.

Reset Your Password

Note: You have to enroll in the password self-service site before you can reset your password. If you have not enrolled and need your password reset, contact the IT Help Desk.

  1. Visit https://pwhelp.mercer.edu
  2. Enter the same username used to access your computer, email, or MyMercer.
  3. Answer your security question and enter the security captcha text at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Leave the Old Password field blank and enter your new password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.
  6. Enter the security captcha text at the bottom of the page.
  7. Click Reset Password. Once changed, the new password will become effective immediately.

Change Your Security Questions

  1. Visit https://pwhelp.mercer.edu and log in with the same username and password used to access your computer, email, or MyMercer.
  2. Click the Enrollment tab.
  3. Select and provide answers for the required security questions.
  4. Click OK. Once changed, the new password will become effective immediately.

Additional Notes

  • If you change or reset your password using the self-service website, the new password will be used to access the following systems: Windows computers, email, MyMercer, Mercercitrix, the MU-Secure wireless network, CampusNexus, VPN, and website authoring tools.

    The password for Blackboard, Moodle, LiveText, and course evaluations will not be changed.
  • If you use a Windows laptop and change your password through the self-service website, you will need to log into Windows with your old password until you can log in with the laptop connected to the Mercer network using a network cable.

Password Tips

  • Use a different password for every website or service you use.
  • Passwords should be changed periodically.
  • Visit Microsoft's Safety & Security Center to see how strong your password is.
  • Never share your password with anyone.
  • If you suspect that someone hs learned your password, change it immediately.
