Free Software Downloads

Mercer IT has compiled several free software downloads that are frequently used by students. Click on the appropriate link to download the software. Should your computer produce an Unknown File Type error, click Save As, and continue the installation.

Antivirus Tools
	Microsoft Security Essentials Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology.
	Avast! Avast! antivirus is free for home use only. You must register with the vendor to use the software at no charge.
	AVG Free Basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows. Limited features, no support. For private and non-commercial use only.
	ClamXav Virus protection for the MAC OS X.
	Symantec Tool removes a failed installation or a damaged Norton product. The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton products (2003-2009), Norton 360, and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.

Spyware/Adware Removal Tools
	Malwarebytes Spyware removal tool.
	Spybot Spyware removal tool.
	Microsoft Microsoft’s spyware protection.
	Lavasoft Ad-Aware Spyware removal tool.

Browsers
	Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer Microsoft's web browser installer.
	Mozilla Firefox An Internet browser alternative to Internet Explorer. By using Firefox, you may be able to avoid security exploits, spyware, etc. that can be obtained by using Internet Explorer.
	Apple Safari Internet browser for both Macintosh and Windows.

FTP Client
	FileZilla FileZilla is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive graphical user interface.

File Compression
	Winzip Software to open .zip archives.

File Viewers
	Adobe Acrobat Reader Application necessary to view .pdf files.
	Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack The Compatibility Pack, when installed in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, opens, edits, and saves files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats.
	Microsoft Office Word Viewer Software designed to view Word (.doc) files.
	Microsoft Office Powerpoint Viewer Software designed to view PowerPoint (.ppt) files.
	Microsoft Office Excel Viewer Software designed to view Excel (.xls) files.
	Apple An installer for Apple's video and audio streaming and playback software. Will download a much larger file directly from Apple.
	Adobe A plug-in necessary to view flash based content.
	Sun Microsystems Java runtime application. Required to use certain applications on Blackboard.
