Student IT Site

In order to protect student-owned computers from viruses and worms, Mercer has implemented Cisco Network Access Control (NAC) , formerly Cisco Clean Access, to ensure that all student computers on the residence hall networks have up-to-date security patches and antivirus defenses. Mercer also requires that all computers run up-to-date antivirus software.

In this section:

Installing Cisco Network Access Control

All computers running Microsoft Windows are required to install the Cisco Network Access Control (NAC) Agent before they can connect to the university network. (See Common Questions below for information on Macintosh or Linux systems.) You will be able to install Cisco NAC Agent when you arrive on campus and connect your personal computer to the Mercer network in your residence hall. Once connected to the network, you will be provided with Cisco NAC installation instructions.

While using the Mercer network, you will also be required to use an antivirus application and install critical patches and updates for your Microsoft operating system. You can install antivirus software prior to arriving on campus. If you don't currently own antivirus software, you may purchase antivirus software from your preferred office supply store or download a free antivirus application.

Common Questions

What is Cisco Network Access Control?
Cisco Network Access Control ensures your computer is running updated anti-virus software and that Windows updates (patches) are installed so as to protect the Mercer network and associated computers. If you do not, it will re-direct you to instructions on how you can meet those requirements.

Cisco Network Access Control performs the following functions:

  • Requires authentication to the network
  • Validates whether the system connecting to the network meets the minimum security standards
  • Quarantines the system until it meets the minimum security standards
  • Provides access to the remediation sites
  • Once the system is validated as “clean,” allows access to the network
