All Mercer computers should be running Windows 11 by Friday, August 1, 2025. Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows 10 after October 14, posing a security threat for any computers still using this version. We encourage all necessary replacements be ordered as soon as possible to allow our team time to deploy them.
- If your laptop is over 4 years old or your desktop is over 5 years old, it must be replaced. The two digits after the letters “RT” on the “Property of Mercer University” label indicate the purchase year of your computer.
- If your computer is compliant and running Windows 10, we request that you complete the upgrade at your earliest convenience by following these steps:
- Verify that your computer is running Windows 10 by typing “winver” in the Windows search bar.
- Back up all important files to your OneDrive or network shared drive.
- Follow the upgrade instructions provided on the IT website. The process will take approximately one hour, and for optimal results, you should connect your computer to Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi during the upgrade.
- If you are unable to complete the upgrade, we will notify you when your automated upgrade is scheduled to occur.
- Lab computers, kiosk stations, and classroom teacher stations are not affected until January 2027, as they operate on a unique version of Windows.
Mercer Service and Support Policy
Per Mercer’s Computer Equipment Service and Support Policy, laptops are to be replaced every 4 years and desktops every 5 years. As outlined in the policy, the time and effort involved in supporting older computers necessitate an additional service charge for each reported incident for computers older than this. All IT-related purchases must be approved.
