Java is a programming language and software platform that is commonly used by websites to provide features beyond what basic web programming languages offer. The information below will help ensure that a computer is configured to work with websites that require Java.

Note: Many Java related issues can be resolved by uninstalling any currently installed versions of Java and re-installing the latest version.


Uninstall Java

Follow the instructions below to uninstall Java from your computer.

Windows 8

  1. Right-click the bottom-left corner of the screen and choose Control Panel from menu that appears.
  2. Choose Uninstall a Program from the Programs category.
  3. Select any programs beginning with "Java" and click the Uninstall button.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the program uninstall. Repeat this process until all Java versions are removed.
Windows 7 and Vista
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Choose Uninstall a Program from the Programs category.
  4. Select any programs beginning with "Java" and click the Uninstall button.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the program uninstall. Repeat this process until all Java versions are removed.
Windows XP
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon.
  4. Select any programs beginning with "Java" and click the Uninstall button.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the program uninstall. Repeat this process until all Java versions are removed.
Mac OS X
  1. Click on the Finder icon located in your dock.
  2. Select Applications in the left sidebar.
  3. In the Search box in the upper-right corner, enter JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
  4. Drag the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin file to the Trash icon in the dock.

Install the Newest Version of Java

Follow the instructions below to install the newest version of Java on your computer.

Windows

  1. Visit the Java website.
  2. Click the Free Java Download button.
  3. Click the Agree and Start Free Download button.
  4. You will be prompted to save or run a file, depending on your web browser. Run the file, and grant permission to begin the installation when prompted.

Mac OS X

  1. Visit the Java website.
  2. Click the Free Java Download button.
  3. Click the Agree and Start Free Download button.
  4. Run the downloaded jre-7u6-macosx-x64.dmg file to begin the installation.
  5. Click the Continue button.
  6. Click the Install button.
  7. Provide your Mac password to continue the installation.
  8. Click the Close button.

After the installation completes, click here to verify if Java is configured correctly. You may need to grant permission to allow the Java plugin to run.
