Recommended Computer Configuration
We recommend the following computer configuration for the best Blackboard Collaborate experience:
- USB headphones with microphone
- USB Webcam
- Firefox web browser
- Java
- Collaborate Launcher
- Wired network connection
Note: Although other web browsers are supported by Collaborate, Firefox is generally the easiest to configure and troubleshoot.
- Plan extra time before class time to prepare your computer to enter a Blackboard Collaborate sessions.
- Built-in microphones and speakers are compatible with Collaborate, but it is recommended to use headphones to prevent audio echo and feedback.
- Use a wired network connection for the best performance.
Follow the instructions below to configure your computer to get started with Blackboard Collaborate.
- Install the Firefox web browser.

- If you are using a headset, connect it to your computer.
- Visit the Blackboard Collaborate Support site and select the V12.6 Configuration Room (EU-SAS) link located under the STEP - 2 Configure your system heading to launch a test classroom.
Note: When joining a Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing session you may need to grant permissions to allow the application to run.
Troubleshooting Specific Issues
Blackboard Collaborate Room Won't Launch
- Java may need to be reinstalled. Visit this page for instructions on how to repair Java.
- Visit the Blackboard Collaborate Support site to verify your minimum system requirements. Follow the steps provided on the site to correct any issues presented.
- Verify Java in enabled in the Java Control Panel.
Blackboard Collaborate Sessions Disconnecting
- Connect using a wired network connection. Wireless connections can be easily disrupted which can cause problems with audio/video, and also cause sessions to be disconnected.
- Try changing to a slower connection speed in the Collaborate settings:
- On a Windows PC: Edit menu -> Preferences -> Session -> Connection
- On a Mac: Blackboard Collaborate menu -> Preferences -> Session -> Connection
Problem With Audio During a Class
- Click the Tools menu at the top of the Collaborate window.
- Mouse over Audio, and click Audio Setup Wizard.
- Follow the prompts to select your audio device and set the volume levels.
Problem with Video During a Class
- Click Tools menu at the top of the Collaborate window.
- Mouse over Video, and click Camera Settings and verify your camera is selected.
