    Mercer IT has detected a new phishing email scam that uses an ‘audio file’ to deliver a phishing attempt. The senders of these emails vary and can have multiple subjects.

    6/1/2021 - "Can i Call you?" Text Scams

    We recently received information of a new Text Phishing (or "Smishing") scam. We had a couple of reports of someone texting from random phone numbers and/or email addresses asking "Can i Call you?"

    There are several strategies you can use to avoid smishing scams Here are just a few:

    • Pause Before you Respond! Only respond to text messages or email when you are 100% certain of the sender.
    • It's Not Always Nice to Share! Never share personal information via text or email.
    • Pause Before you Click! Be cautious of clicking on links in a text or email from unknown senders.

     


    3/30/2021 - IRS warns university students and staff of impersonation email scam

    WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service today warned of an ongoing IRS-impersonation scam that appears to primarily target educational institutions, including students and staff who have “.edu” email addresses.

    The IRS’ phishing@irs.gov has received complaints about the impersonation scam in recent weeks from people with email addresses ending in “.edu.” The phishing emails appear to target university and college students from both public and private, profit and non-profit institutions. The suspect emails display the IRS logo and use various subject lines such as “Tax Refund Payment” or “Recalculation of your tax refund payment.” It asks people to click a link and submit a form to claim their refund.

    Taxpayers who believe they have a pending refund can easily check on its status at “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov. 

    The phishing website requests taxpayers provide information like:

    • Social Security Number
    • First Name
    • Last Name
    • Date of Birth
    • Prior Year Annual Gross Income (AGI)
    • Driver's License Number
    • Current Address
    • City
    • State/U.S. Territory
    • ZIP Code/Postal Code
    • Electronic Filing PIN

    People who receive this scam email should not click on the link in the email, but they can report it to the IRS. For security reasons, save the email using “save as” and then send that attachment to phishing@irs.gov or forward the email as an attachment to phishing@irs.gov. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and IRS Criminal Investigation have been notified.

    Taxpayers who believe they may have provided identity thieves with this information should consider immediately obtaining an Identity Protection PIN. This is a voluntary opt-in program. An IP PIN is a six-digit number that helps prevent identity thieves from filing fraudulent tax returns in the victim’s name. 

    Taxpayers who attempt to e-file their tax return and find it rejected because a return with their SSN already has been filed should file a Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, to report themselves as a possible identity theft victim.     In November 2020, GeniusU suffered a data breach. As a result, if you have a GeniusU account, you could be in danger of being compromised.

    If you still have a GeniusU account, you should change that account's password immediately. If your GeniusU password was the same or similar to your Mercer password, you must also change your Mercer password immediately. Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your GeniusU password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your GeniusU account.

    In September 2020, the Nitro PDF service suffered a data breach. As a result, if you have a Nitro PDF account, you could be in danger of being compromised.

If your Nitro PDF password was the same or similar to your Mercer password, you must also change your Mercer password immediately. Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your Nitro PDF password.     In August 2020, Bonobos suffered a data breach. As a result, if you have a Bonobos account, you could be in danger of being compromised.

Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your Bonobos password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your Bonobos account.

Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your Romwe password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your Romwe account.

    10/26/2020 - Amazon Vishing Scam

    We recently received information of a new Voice Phishing (or "vishing") scam. We had a couple of reports of someone calling from what appeared to be a Mercer number (478-301-XXXX) claiming to be from Amazon. The caller explained a large purchase was made on the employee(s) account and urged them to follow the prompts to discuss the issue. This caller is not affiliated with Mercer and if you receive this call, do not provide any personal information and hang up immediately.

     


    8/7/2020 - ProctorU Data Breach

    In June 2020, the ProctorU suffered a data breach. As a result, Mercer IT received a notification that your Mercer email was used to create a ProctorU account and could be in danger of being compromised.

    If you still have a ProctorU account, you should change that account's password immediately. If your ProctorU password was the same or similar to your Mercer password, you must also change your Mercer password immediately. Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your ProctorU password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your ProctorU account.

    The Chronicle of Higher Education suffered an alleged data breach. As a result, Mercer IT received a notification that your Mercer email is tied to a Chronicle of Higher Education account and could be in danger of being compromised.

    If you still have a Chronicle of Higher Education account, you should change that account's password immediately. If your Chronicle of Higher Education password was the same or similar to your Mercer password, you must also change your Mercer password immediately. Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your Chronicle of Higher Education password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your Chronicle of Higher Education account.

    6/25/2020 - Mathway Data Breach

    Mathway suffered a data breach. As a result, Mercer IT received a notification that your Mercer email was used to create a Mathway account and could be in danger of being compromised.

    If you still have a Mathway account, you should change that account's password immediately. If your Mathway password was the same or similar to your Mercer password, you must also change your Mercer password immediately. Your new Mercer account password should be completely different from your Mathway password. We also recommend you change the password for any accounts which had the same password as your Mathway account.

    10/01/2018 - Extortion Email Scam

    We have recently recieved information of a new twist on an old extortion scam. Email messages are being sent to trick users into believing a hacker has compromised your computer and used your wbcam to record a video of you. It threatens to release the video to all your contacts unless you pay a Bitcoin ransom. The email will attempt to reference a real password previously tied to your email address as an imtimidation tactic. For more information, visit KrebsOnSecurity.



    9/11/2018- Active Phishing Campaign Targeting Student Email Accounts

    The Federal Student Aid (FSA) has identified a malicious phishing campaign that may lead to potential fraud associated with student financial aid refunds and distributions. Visit the Federal Student Aid (FSA) website for details and to view the suspicious email.



    5/29/2018 - VPNFilter malware threat

    As a result of the VPNFilter malware threat, the FBI has recommended that all owners of a small or home office router reboot the device and take normal precautions to prevent infection, such as utilizing strong passwords and upgrading the device’s firmware. For more information, visit the FBI’s website. Mercer University’s routers are not impacted by this malware.



    5/12/2017 - WannaCry Ransomware

    As you may have heard through news outlets, a new form of ransomware named WannaCry is currently spreading through computers around the world. This infection can be spread through spam emails containing infected attachments.

    As always, we highly encourage you to protect yourself and your data by being especially cautious when opening emails or attachments from unfamiliar sources, especially if these emails are related to job offers, invoices, or prescription drugs. At this time, no Mercer computers have been affected, and your caution is appreciated. If you have any reason to doubt the authenticity of an email, contact the IT Help Desk.
